National hedge laying championships
The practice of ‘hedge laying’, the weaving together of hedges, is a traditional craft that continues to be practiced today. It is inscribed in the Dutch national inventory of immaterial cultural heritage.
The Maasheggen hosts a yearly Dutch championship in which, armed with seedlings and a traditional hedge blade, participants strive to create the sturdiest and most traditional hedgerows. Thus, the craft is kept alive, hedges are restored, and participants are educated. Our youth are also keenly involved.
