About Maasheggen UNESCO
UNESCO has designated the Maasheggen as a biosphere reserve within UNESCO’s ‘Man and the Biosphere’ Programme. Biosphere reserves within the MAB-programme are dynamic areas where man and nature co-exist. In such areas economic activity, conservation, public recreation, entrepreneurship, nature, and ecology go hand-in-hand. As a biosphere reserve the Maasheggen has become part of a global network of more than 650 UNESCO biosphere reserves within 120 different countries. These areas are representative of UNESCO’s mission and are crucial in translating this mission to a local scale.
As of 2018 The Maasheggen is only the only biosphere reserve of the Netherlands.
